Smart Growth - An urban planner's goal of packing people so close together that they can walk to every destination. (Families with two working parents and kids in grade, middle and high school do not exist in the urban planner's world.) These families are expected to carry a weeks worth of groceries on their back as they walk from their local store (supermarkets don't exist either.) They go to restaurants and the theatre (or, more likely, the topless joint) nightly since their apartments are too small to really live in. They only need to visit stores and people that are on transit routes. They don't mind walking, then waiting in the rain (in a crime ridden neighborhood) for a bus to take them to a light rail station (which at least has a covered area) to wait for MAX which will whisk them, at an average speed of 15 MPH, to a waiting area for the bus that will take them one step closer to their ultimate destination. Two hours and five miles later they arrive fresh and relaxed at their destination ready for eight hours work, feeling on top of the world because they have saved 30 cents worth of gasoline ($1.50/gal & 25 MPG).
